The very upright, columnar shape of the Lombardy Poplar is a common sight in both urban and rural areas where it has been planted to screen buildings or provide shelter from strong winds. Its highly ornamental shape has ensured its inclusion in parklands and large gardens. Originally propagated from cuttings from a tree in Italy in the eighteenth century, it is now found all over the world.
Site and soil
Well-drained soil in full sun; avoid chalky situations. Wind tolerant.
Height and spread
After 10 years: 10m x 2m
After 20 years: 17m x 3m
Leaf and bark
The triangular leaves are glossy dark green to 10cm long, changing to yellow before leaf fall in autumn. The bark is dark brown and ridged.
Flower, seed and fruit
The Lombardy Poplar is a male clone so cannot produce seed. The red male catkins appear in March.
Uses
Screening, wind-break, specimen tree, avenues.
Wildlife
The Lombardy Poplar attracts a range of insects. Its dense habit makes it a good nesting site for birds.
Pruning
The Lombardy Poplar does not require pruning.
