A large, upright suckering shrub with deep red stems, which are particularly conspicuous when the plant loses its leaves in winter. Planted in large groups, especially near water where its reflection doubles the effect, it is very striking. Native to Siberia and China, it is a tough plant which is very suited to damp soils, although it will grow almost anywhere. Good autumn colour.
Site and soil
Suited to most soils and situations, Cornus alba does particularly well on damp sites.

Leaf and bark
The oval dark green leaves turn red in autumn. The smooth shiny bark is a rich red, particularly pronounced on young shoots.
Flower, seed and fruit
The small white flowers are held in flat clusters in May and June. They are followed by white berries in autumn, which are sometimes tinged blue.
Uses
Landscaping, gardens, informal hedging, mixed hedges, screening. Makes a handsome waterside barrier where there is public access. The bright stems of Cornus alba are used by florists in displays. They are also used to add colour in basket making.
Wildlife
Insects are attracted to the flowers. Cover for birds and small mammals.
Pruning
Prune normally as part of a mixed hedge. For the best colour on other plantings, cut out one third of the stems at ground level in late February.
